| Maine is a great passion for me. And, yes, I really enjoy winter! Arriving here felt like coming home. The bare facts. In 2000 the population of Maine was 1,274,923 giving 41.3 people per square mile for the total land area of 33,215 square miles. Maine has 3,500 miles of coastline and 6,000 lakes and ponds.
